On 18 July, school dad and governor Michael Birnie took on an incredible 24-hour cycling challenge in aid of the Big Build. Riding an 11km loop through Hatherop, Fairford, Quenington and Coln St Aldwyns again and again, he covered an astonishing 352 miles in total!

Michael has already raised more than £5,000 for the project and was given a hero’s welcome on his return. A fantastic achievement — thank you, Michael!

On 31 May, Year 3’s Heidi Forbes became the youngest girl ever to complete the National Three Peaks Challenge — conquering Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in just 22 hours and 23 minutes! She was joined by her brothers Otis and Heath and her parents Rob and Helen. Together they raised money for both the Big Build and the new Astro pitch at Farmor’s. Well done, Heidi and family!

Earlier this year, Hatherop pupils rose to the ‘Grow-a-Fiver’ challenge — turning a simple £5 into an incredible £10,300 for the Big Build! From baking and bracelet-making to mountain climbs, bike rides and even a full school disco, the children showed amazing creativity and determination.

A huge well done to every pupil who took part, and thank you to the Growth Hub for donating the starter fivers and to Midas Communications for matchfunding. A brilliant team effort!

On 3 May, the "School Dad Scullers" rowed an incredible 314,509 metres — that’s 195 miles — in a 24-hour rowathon! Cheered on by friends and locals, the dads raised a fantastic £6,200 for the Big Build, smashing their £5,000 target. The event also marked the lively start of the Coln Village Party. A huge thank you to Chris White for manning the barbecue, The New Inn for donating a keg of Butty Bach, and Yvette Kirk, Nick Brett and the Coln Stores team for their amazing support.

On 18 January 2025, The Barn Theatre in Cirencester hosted a one-off live performance of The Weakest Link in aid of the Big Build, with the show’s original quizmaster Anne Robinson at the helm! The evening proved a huge hit, even catching the attention of ITV News, who came along to film a special feature — including a hilarious interview with the Queen of Mean herself. A brilliant event, and a big thank you to everyone involved!

Ben Nevis walkers at the summit.jpg

Brrr! This photo is of Skylark TA Fiona Ward and fellow walkers Grace Ward, Josse White, Sarah Monk, Nadia Baker and Sam Key at the summit of Ben Nevis in September 2024. Together, the group raised more than £1,000 for the Hatherop Big Build, obliterating their original £500 target. Amazing effort!

Ahead of the second half of the summer term, Year 4's Maggie set herself the challenge of reading one letter for every pound of the Big Build fundraising target. She finished her epic 1.5m-letter readathon with time to spare, raising a very impressive £832 in the process. Well done, Maggie!

On 15 June, Emma, Erin, Freja, Olivia, Ollie (Pugh) and Willow took part in the 'colour run' hosted by Ampney Crucis Primary and raised a whopping £555 between them! A superb effort by the children, who joined pupils from neighbouring schools to run laps around the school field while being covered in a rainbow of powder paint and taking on an obstacle course to boot. We hope it was as fun as it looked!

In May 2024, Ava, Emma, Freja, Heidi and Ophelia became the Hatherop Big Build's first fundraisers, making £57.20 between them baking all sorts of delicious goodies while earning their Brownies charity badges at the same time. Great effort girls!

Over the summer half term, Year 6's Luna climbed Snowdon via the most challenging of the many routes up the mountain, raising a fantastic £353! Despite heading off to secondary school in September, Luna is keen to help raise as much money as she can for the Big Build to enable future year 5 and 6 pupils to move out of the temporary Elliot Building. Thank you so much, Luna!
